Médica Sur S.A.B. of C.V. is a private health institution in
Mexico City, which owns a hospital and 140 clinical analysis
laboratory branch offices (under the brands of Laboratorio Médica
Sur, Laboratorio Medico Polanco and Laboratorio Ruiz). It operates
as a public company listed on the Mexican Stock Exchange since
1994, under the key MEDICA.
Médica Sur is a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network,
and as such, it shares information and clinical cases with members
of the network; it has the accreditations and / or certifications
of the General Health Council of Mexico, the
Joint Commission International, the
College of American Pathologists, the
American Heart Association, the Mexican Accreditation
Entity and the Mexican Council of the Medical Tourism Industry,
among others. In 2013 Médica Sur obtained the National Quality
Award.
The hospital, classified as highly specialized, is located in the
Tlalpan county, in the South of Mexico City, at the heart of the
hospital area of this city. Its total built area is just over one
hundred thousand square meters2 , with 138 rooms and 26 suites, three towers with more than 500
medical offices of all specialties, laboratory facilities for
Pathology, Imaging and Therapy, a research center, two
restaurants, coffee shops a Holiday Inn hotel and an auditorium
with a five hundred people capacity.
The company operates the Médica Sur Clinic Foundation, which
performs biomedical research, specialized medical teaching and
social assistance. The Foundation offers an average of 2,000
consultations per year, as well as six hundred laboratory studies,
1,500 treatments and 1,500 procedures.
Teaching
Médica Sur offers teaching and training spaces to young physicians
in medical sciences. Educational programs aimed to medical and
postgraduate students are taught by the Postgraduate Studies
Division of the Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous
University of Mexico (UNAM). The teaching work is supported by the
Center for Education, Research and Medical Innovation (CEIIM), the
Virtual Institutional Educational Center (CEVI) and the Medical
Simulation and Skills Center (CESIDEM), all of them part of Médica
Sur.
Research
Médica Sur has a scientific research unit, the Department of
Biomedical Research, which develops and promotes research projects
and participates in the development of continuing medical
education courses. It publishes the scientific journals

Annals of Hepatolgy4
, as well as it promotes and coordinates the implementation,
approval and follow-up of research protocols and leads the
Research Committee for Human Studies and the Commissions of
Ethics, Biosafety and Research of Médica Sur.5 .
